Gottschee's river was called the Rinse; it flooded every few years. This event was called "Hochwasser". As children we always looked forward to Hochwasser. We would build little barges and maybe borrow a row boat. It made us feel like we were in Venice.

The following picture was Hochwasser in front of the Volksschule building. It is the side which faced our house. I am the third boy from the left.

The following picture was taken near my grandmother's house. As you can see, I enjoyed the water.

The next picture shows my grandmother's house. Her name was Ana Marek. Her house is the first one on the left. I was born in a room upstairs on Ash-Wednesday in 1933. The bakery was always flooded during Hochwasser. I still remember boards held up with beer kegs creating an inside board-walk.
